Furniture

Furniture falls into two distinct categories: brown and gold, and I work with the gold. Over the years I have been lucky enough to treat large collections from many country estates. Although I don’t work on the upholstery at all, I do work very closely with the historic upholstery experts. Here are some of my projects.

State Bed of Prince Tallyrand

Careful treatment to all of the original carved, gilded and painted surfaces for the restoration of this truly grand lit à la Polonaise. Re-upholstery was carried out by RD Robins of London.

Owner: Welbeck Abbey Estate

George II giltwood torchères

Many subsequent overgilds buried the exquisite detail of the carving. Careful removal of these layers revealed the original surface.

Owner: The Rt.Hon. The Earl of Derby.

LOUIS XV LACQUER COMMODE

Cleaning, surface consolidation and polishing restored this commode to its former glory. Although this is lacquerwork rather than gold it still falls within my specialism.

George II giltwood stand

Several overgilds and age left the cabinet stand looking tired and old. Some de-layering, cleaning, consolidation and a little re-gilding gave the stand back its presence.

Owner: Private

George III giltwood armchairs

Pair of early George III giltwood armchairs. Insect infestation and environment change had made these chairs deteriorate. Full surface consolidation and replacement, followed by new gilding.
